Nutrition labels look like they should be universal — numbers, grams, percentages — but the format, required information, and even the underlying serving-size assumptions vary meaningfully by country. Reading a label from an unfamiliar country's packaging without accounting for these differences can lead to comparisons that look apples-to-apples but aren't.
Serving size is the single biggest source of confusion. Some countries require labels to state nutrition per 100 grams or 100 milliliters — a fixed, comparable reference amount — while others require it per typical serving, which varies by manufacturer and product. Two labels showing similar-looking numbers can describe very different actual portions depending on which convention is in use.
Terminology differs too. What one country's label calls "energy" in kilojoules, another states as "calories" in kilocalories, and the two use different units entirely — 1 kilocalorie equals roughly 4.2 kilojoules, so a food listing 800 kJ and another listing 190 kcal for a similar product may actually be describing very similar energy content, despite the numbers looking unrelated at a glance.
Rounding rules and disclosure thresholds vary as well. Some regulatory systems allow a label to round a nutrient down to zero below a certain small threshold, meaning a food can legally be labeled "zero" for something it contains a small amount of. This is a regulatory convention, not a claim that the nutrient is entirely absent.
Required nutrients differ by jurisdiction too — some countries mandate disclosure of specific fats, fiber, or sodium in ways others don't, and added-sugar disclosure in particular is inconsistent internationally. A label that looks less detailed isn't necessarily hiding something; it may simply be complying with a different regulatory standard.
When comparing a food across countries, converting both to the same unit (kilocalories or kilojoules) and the same reference amount (per 100g is usually easiest) removes most of the confusion caused by these formatting differences, and is generally a more reliable comparison than reading the two labels' headline numbers directly against each other.
Front-of-package labeling schemes add a further layer of difference. Some countries use warning-style labels that flag high sugar, sodium, or saturated fat content directly on the package front, while others rely entirely on the back-of-package nutrition panel without any front-facing summary. A product without a front warning label isn't necessarily lower in those nutrients — it may simply be sold in a market that doesn't require that format.
Fortification and enrichment standards differ by country too, meaning a food that's required to be fortified with certain vitamins or minerals in one country's regulations might not be in another, even for what's otherwise a similar or identical product. This mostly affects micronutrient listings rather than calorie counts, but it's part of why label comparisons across countries need a bit more context than lining up two numbers side by side.
When traveling or shopping for imported goods, a reasonable habit is to check which reference amount a label is using before comparing it to anything else — per 100g/100ml, per serving, or per package — since that single detail resolves most of the confusion that comes from comparing labels formatted under different national standards.
